Business Spotlight: Indiana Orthopedic Institute Building a Destination for Orthopedic Excellence in Indiana

Indiana Orthopedic Institute at Innovation Mile has a founding story worth telling. Just two and a half years ago, Dr. Michael Meneghini set out to build a destination for orthopedic excellence right here in Indiana.

As the first tenant of Innovation Mile, Indiana Orthopedic Institute helped set the tone for what the district could become: an ecosystem centered on innovation, collaboration, and high-impact industries.

What started as an idea has grown into a thriving practice of 23 physician providers and more than 60 employees, a pace of growth that reflects both demand and purpose.

This commitment to innovation is resonating. As he noted,
“What we are doing is resonating not only with patients but the people who care for patients because they are gravitating towards what we are doing, which is exciting.”

A Vision Rooted in Indiana

For the Institute’s leadership, the decision to launch in Indiana was not incidental. It was deeply personal.

Faced with the opportunity to lead a hip and knee replacement division at the Mayo Clinic or build something new, the choice became clear. Staying in Indiana, where Dr. Meneghini and his wife were both born and raised, meant not only building something impactful for patients but also keeping his family rooted in the place they call home. With that, a vision took shape to create a statewide practice dedicated to caring for Hoosiers.

That vision aligned seamlessly with the City of Noblesville. Early conversations with Mayor Chris Jensen’s office and the Economic Development team led to a natural fit within Innovation Mile, a district designed to bring together forward-thinking industries and community-driven growth.

Indiana Orthopedic Institute at Innovation Mile: A District-Defining Partnership

From the beginning, Indiana Orthopedic Institute found more than just a location in Noblesville. It found a partner.

Even after the facility was up and running, the City and its Economic Development team continued to stay engaged, inviting the Institute into community events and fostering an ongoing relationship with local business leaders. That level of connection and consistency has left a lasting impression.

As Dr. Michael Meneghini shared,
“I have been very impressed with them (the City of Noblesville) over time as they foster a leadership collaborative spirit and tone within Noblesville that will continue to drive more innovation, more growth, and I think it's a great place for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit.”

Innovation at the Core

Indiana Orthopedic Institute is leading the way in healthcare innovation as the first fully digitally integrated ambulatory surgery center in the country, focused on musculoskeletal care.

The facility is designed as a fully integrated, “one-stop shop” for musculoskeletal care, combining evaluation, surgery, and physical therapy all under one roof. This streamlined, end-to-end model improves coordination between providers, increases efficiency, and enhances the overall patient experience.

At the heart of this approach is an advanced electronic patient tracking system called Ospitek. While fewer than 10% of surgical centers nationwide are currently using AI-powered patient tracking systems, IOI has made it a central part of how care is delivered.

Ospitek tracks each patient’s journey in real time, providing live updates to care teams and significantly reducing the need for manual data entry. This allows nurses and staff to spend more time focused on patients and less time on administrative tasks.

The technology also enhances communication and transparency for families. Loved ones receive real-time text message updates throughout the surgical process, including notifications on where the patient is in their journey and when the surgeon is ready to meet with them.

Beyond convenience, the impact is clinical. As Dr. Meneghini explains, the system increases efficiency across the surgical process, helping reduce time spent in surgery, improving safety, and generating valuable data insights without adding burden to staff.

Leadership, Recognition, and Innovation Distinction

While IOI is a newer organization, both the institute and Dr. Meneghini are already widely recognized within the orthopedic field for leadership in innovation and surgical excellence.

Dr. Meneghini is consistently acknowledged as a national leader in hip and knee replacement surgery, with frequent recognition across regional and national “Top Doctor” lists. He is also a sought-after speaker and educator in orthopedic surgery, particularly in the advancement of outpatient joint replacement and value-based care models.

His work has positioned him at the forefront of a broader shift in orthopedic care delivery, helping lead the movement toward outpatient joint replacement, digitally enabled surgical workflows, and patient-centered care models that improve outcomes while increasing efficiency.

Indiana Orthopedic Institute builds on that foundation as a nationally recognized example of innovation in care delivery, particularly through its fully digitally integrated surgical model and early adoption of AI-enabled patient tracking systems.

Together, these distinctions reflect a broader identity: not just a clinical practice, but a growing model for what modern orthopedic care can look like.

Designed for Patients and Community

Location plays a key role in the Institute’s success.

With nearby hotels already accommodating patients traveling in for care, and a growing mix of restaurants and amenities, the surrounding area supports both patients and providers. These amenities allow the Institute to stay focused on what it does best, while the broader district enhances the overall experience.

The proximity to Riverview Health Arena at Innovation Mile also creates a natural synergy. Positioned along a main route to the arena, the Institute benefits from strong visibility, while the connection between orthopedics and athletics reinforces the district’s identity.

Growing Alongside Innovation Mile

As Innovation Mile continues to develop, Indiana Orthopedic Institute sees more opportunity ahead.

There is a strong belief that the district will evolve alongside the city, physically connecting to the rest of Noblesville and fostering new innovation opportunities. The types of businesses that choose to locate within Innovation Mile will help shape its future, and the Institute is excited to be part of that trajectory.

Talent, Education, and Opportunity

Access to a talented workforce remains critical, especially as the Institute continues to expand its team. Noblesville’s ability to attract skilled professionals, combined with its strong school system and community commitment to education, makes it an ideal environment for building that workforce.

Beyond Noblesville, Indiana’s broader leadership in orthopedics creates valuable opportunities for collaboration. Proximity to institutions and employers across the state, including Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Purdue, IU, Rose-Hulman, and Eli Lilly, positions the Institute at the center of a strong and growing ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

Indiana Orthopedic Institute represents more than rapid growth in healthcare. It reflects a broader shift toward how care can be delivered when innovation, technology, and patient experience are designed together from the start.

As both the first tenant of Innovation Mile and a nationally recognized leader in orthopedic care delivery, IOI continues to set a standard for what modern musculoskeletal care can look like: efficient, integrated, and deeply patient-centered.

Its continued growth in Noblesville is not just about expansion, but about shaping a model that others will look to for years to come, where advanced care, community partnership, and innovation are built into the same foundation.
